Natural Wood or Composite

The biggest question from homeowners when considering a deck remodel or building a new deck is, “do I choose natural wood or composite”. Natural wood is still the number one choice but over the past few years composite has definitely risen in popularity, with popular choices such as Azek or Trex. For customers in New England, good news! Remodeling Magazine’s 2014 Cost vs. Value Report says adding a new deck is a good choice. The ROI for composite is 78% and it is even better for wood at 101% back on your investment.

Wood Deck

Natural wood is less expensive than composite, about 50% less overall. It does require more maintenance though, it need to be cleaned regularly and treated or stained every few years.

Composite Deck

Composite decks are more money initially but will eventually pay off in the long run. Once the composite is installed it is virtually worry free, it will not warp, crack, split or fade. It does however become very hot to the touch in warm climate areas.
